True story in 1954, Joe Baumann hit 72 home runs for the Roswell Rockets, the most exciting thing to happen to Roswell since the alien landing. Not to imply a causal relationship. Well, maybe a little one...in Harry Turtledove's The Star and the Rockets.

The Star and the Rockets A TorCom Original eBook Harry Turtledove
This pleasant story of the sort that a few years ago would have made a nice change of pace story in an SF magazine, but which can now, in the age of ebooks, be marketed directly to readers. It does a good job of showcasing Turtledove's gift for capturing the details of time and place and the rhythms of everyday life (as well as his love of baseball), but it lacks the larger themes that make his best work so interesting.Product details

The Star and the Rockets A TorCom Original eBook Harry Turtledove Reviews
I thought this was great. This would especially draw in baseball fans but is something that would have an appeal to everyone.
The fact that he makes the aliens almost comical is great.
This could have been a rising star, but without a strong ending it fritters away the last few pages. A quick read for a doctor's waiting room.
Joe Bauman was a real person who hit 72 home runs for the Rosswell Rockets of the Class C Longhorn League in 1954. Turtledove really knits the Rosswell alien heritage with Bauman's real achievements. This is a great read!
A short little story that shows that sometimes the strange doesn't have to be scary so much as just respected.
